Zambia and Zimbabwe: Border Crossing

What are the visa requirements for crossing the border?

Travellers planning to cross the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe should know the visa requirements.  Depending on citizenship, visitors may need to obtain a visa before arrival or at the border.  It is essential to check the latest entry requirements to ensure a smooth and hassle-free border crossing.

In general, though, Zambia opened their entry requirements after COVID-19 to boost tourism.  For most countries, a simple free visa stamp on arrival can be obtained at the border itself.  Zimbabwe is still a little more complicated, with different rates of citizens of other countries and single and multi-entry visas only allowed for various countries.  A visa on arrival at the border post for Zimbabwe ranges from about USD 50 to USD 75.

However, you don’t have to necessarily cross into the other country to enjoy the views from the bridge.  Zambia and Zimbabwe allow visitors a gate pass onto the bridge and back.

How do you cross the Victoria Falls Bridge into Zambia or Zimbabwe?

Crossing the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge into either Zambia or Zimbabwe is an exhilarating experience.  Visitors can walk across the bridge, offering breathtaking views of the cascading water and the dramatic gorge below.  This is undoubtedly a highlight for many tourists visiting the area.

It’s an easy 1.6-km walk (about 20 minutes) from one border post to the other, but we recommend taking your time to enjoy the view and experience.  The Shearwater Bungee Cafe on the Zambian side, just before the bridge deck, is where you can register for activities such as the Bridge Bungee Jump, the Bridge Bungee Swing, and the Batoka Gorge Zipline.  The views from the cafe are unique, and they do, in our opinion, the best bacon and egg roll in Victoria Falls.

Are there specific regulations for crossing the border?

When crossing the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, it is essential to adhere to the regulations set forth by the respective immigration authorities.  This includes presenting valid travel documents, abiding by customs regulations, and complying with specific border crossing protocols.

Livingstone and Victoria Falls Bridge

What is the distance between Livingstone and Victoria Falls?

The actual town centres of Livingstone, located in Zambia, and Victoria Falls, found in Zimbabwe, are approximately 16 kilometres apart.  On the Zimbabwe side, the Falls are less than 1,000 metres from town, about 11 km from Livingstone town.

Can one walk across the Victoria Falls Bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe?

Absolutely!  Walking across the Victoria Falls Bridge offers a unique opportunity to straddle the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, providing unparalleled views of the falls and the surrounding landscape.  This experience is a must-do for visitors looking to create lasting memories of their journey.

We recently crossed with my elderly parents, who got quite tired after breakfast at the Bungee Cafe and the midday sun.  So, for the remaining 800 metres to the Zambian border post from the bridge deck, we caught a rickety tuc-tuc-type ride, which was highly entertaining and great fun.  Taxis will also ferry from one border post to the next.

How do you get from Livingstone to Victoria Falls?

Travelling from Livingstone to Victoria Falls is convenient, with various transportation options for different preferences and budgets.  Whether opting for organized tours, private transfers, or public transport, numerous ways exist to reach the falls and explore this remarkable natural wonder.  Expect to pay about USD 30 for a taxi from Livingstone Town to the border post.

Practical Tips for Crossing the Border

What are the transportation options available for crossing the border?

When crossing the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, travellers can choose from various transportation options, including taxis, shuttles, and rental vehicles.

What travel documents are essential for border crossing?

Essential travel documents, such as a valid passport, visa (if required), and any additional documentation specified by immigration authorities, must be presented when crossing the border.  Ensuring all necessary paperwork is in order will streamline the border-crossing process.

Are there specific time restrictions for crossing the border?

The Zambian and Zimbabwean Border Posts are open from 06.00 – 22.00 daily.  It is best to avoid the peak times (around 08.00 – 10.00) to avoid queues.

Exploring Both Sides of Victoria Falls

What are the main differences between the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of Victoria Falls?

Both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of Victoria Falls offer unique perspectives and experiences.  The Zambian side is renowned for its up-close views of the eastern side of the falls and the tranquil surroundings of the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.  In contrast, the Zimbabwean side boasts expansive panoramas facing the water cascades of the whole Falls and the famed Victoria Falls Bridge, which offers adrenaline-pumping activities such as the iconic bungee jump.

Is a single-entry visa sufficient to explore both sides?

A single-entry visa will be sufficient for just one day in either of the different countries.  However,  it may not be enough for visitors wishing to explore further.  The cost of a multi-entry visa is usually marginally more, so we think it’s worth getting.  It is also important to note that if you are starting in Zimbabwe, we recommend getting a “Kaza Visa” on entry to Zimbabwe.  This allows you to cross into Zambia without paying for a visa upon returning to Zimbabwe.

What are the notable attractions in the Victoria Falls National Park?

The Victoria Falls National Park, encompassing the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides of the falls, is home to many attractions.  Visitors can marvel at the cascading water, embark on scenic walks within the rainforest, and witness the diverse wildlife in the region, making it a truly captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
